Deputy public relations officer of the Eastern regional Police Sargent Francis Gomado has warned the state against giving weapons to every police officer in the attempt to arm them.
According to him, not all officers in the country can be trusted to be professional with the use of arms.
Government has announced police officers on Traffic duties along the road will be armed. It comes in the wake of the killing of two officers of the Motto traffic department at Kasoa last week.
In a Facebook post, the officer said the decision to arm officers must be thought through carefully.
“I can guarantee that some of us will use it to rob , use it to settle scores with people, rent it out to the criminals , and some using it to kill innocent Ghanaians etc. Then, there comes another debate of policemen being brut, robbers, killers, etc
Let’s think twice else, disaster.
“My take is that not all of us can be trusted so, therefore, in taking such a decision, we need to do the needful and not any adhoc measure that will bring about mishaps at the end. Let us not make any mistake by going on that tangent. We have precedence to share and history would also guide us. Let’s look sharp by thinking outside the box,” he wrote on Facebook.
Meanwhile, the key suspect in the attack on the officers was arrested on Saturday. Two of his accomplices were picked up on the same day of the incident.
