Maverick politician and founder of the defunct United Renaissance Party, “Chuck” Kofi Wayo, is in the news again. The Nima-born former Texas domiciled oil dealer has described President John Evans Atta Mills, the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Nii Oko Vanderpuije and the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Amarh Ashiety as a bunch of inept people who need to be arrested for allowing Ghanaians to die needlessly out of cholera outbreak.
Mr. Wayo is also calling on the Health Minister, Joseph Yieleh Chireh, to voluntarily “put himself in jail” or resign over his handling of the epidemic which has killed some 61 Ghanaians.
The Ghana Health Service (GHS) postulates that over 4,000 cholera cases have been recorded since the outbreak of the disease in the latter part of 2010 with officials of the Disease Surveillance Unit at the GHS describing the situation as worrying which needs urgent attention.
Some health experts say Ghana has over the years been known to be a cholera endemic country, owing largely to the attitudinal and lifestyle of some Ghanaians.
Pontificating on his weekly socio-political programme aired on Accra-based Vibe FM dubbed Capital Talk, Mr. Wayo who decried the inability of some Ghanaians to observe simple personal hygiene to stem the spread of the disease, wondered what the current minister of health was doing to combat cholera which seems to be an albatross hanging around the neck of health service.
He also questioned why in this technological age, open drainage systems are still being constructed also wondered why open drains are still being constructed in this present age
“Now, you ask the Minister of Health, how many times have we had cholera in Ghana? Every Year!...Nobody does anything about it, it just happens that this gov’t is in power now so we have to hold them responsible because those we have come, they’ve gone, they didn’t do anything, nobody held them responsible…Why are we still digging (open) gutters in the 21st Century?” he asked.
Ghanaians, according to him were suffering because there was absence of social protection and this sometimes compels him to “raise hell” at personalities like Col. Gbvelo Lartey, Gen. Nunoo Mensah and even the Vice President to see to the plight of some unfortunate ones.
“…do you know there is nowhere Ghanaians can go to get help from the government? There is no social protection! So I ended up forcing my way, I had to take people to see Gen. Nunoo Mensah, Col. Gbvelo, the Vice-President because that’s the best I can do…sometimes if they don’t wanna see me I raise hell but at least they give me the opportunity…,” he added.
The outspoken politician also linked the wrong ways of doing things by the country’s leaders to the mental psyche which he asserted is based on wickedness from their infancy. “The mentality here is based on wickedness, you and your family that’s it!
“You can tell by the way we are because when we are growing up we don’t eat at the table with our family,” he concluded.
Asked what he will do if he had the pleasure to sit at table with the President, Professor J.E.A Mills, the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Nii Oko Vanderpuije and the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Amarh Ashiety, the URP leader minced no words and blurted out that he will tell them to the face they are a bunch of inept people and need to be goaled.
“You are incompetent and you all ought to be arrested for allowing human beings to just die,” he said.
As if that was not harsh enough, the cigar-loving abrasive-talking Kofi Wayo also called on the Minister of Health, Joseph Yieleh Chireh to voluntarily “put himself in jail”.
“since they won’t put him in there, he should volunteer, he should show God that he fears God or I will resign! He should resign; in any country, you will resign…,” he screamed.
