Child Rights International, a non-governmental organisation has urged the on security agencies to arrest people who attempt to use children to foment violence during the December 7 elections.

It said the security agencies should ensure that children rights are not violated during the election period, especially, in communities described as flash points.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the Executive Director of the organisation, Mr. Bright Appiah, proposed a maximum security for minors who might be lured by politicians to vote.

He said the interest of children matter in the elections and therefore, the necessary steps should be taken to protect their welfare saying “any persons found to influence a child to vote should be dealt with as prescribed by the law”.

Mr. Appiah mentioned schools, children parks and correctional homes as places where security should be intensified to ensure the safety of children.

“The Inter-Party Advisory Committee and the Peace Council must push these agenda to ensure that children are not manhandled during the elections,” he said.

Mr. Appiah, however, commended political parties for not engaging children in their political activities, be it a form of advertisement and endorsement.

“The political parties have demonstrated this commitment as we see minimal use of children in political activities and we congratulate them,” he said.
