Arrested UCC students left campus without permission – Management

It has come to light that the University of Cape Coast students who were arrested on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, left the UCC campus without proper permission.

Per the University’s regulations for Junior Members, students, who intend to travel in groups, are to get proper approval before leaving the campus.

In a statement signed by the University’s Registrar, John Kofi Nyan, it clarified that only 24 of the arrested persons are in the scool’s data base.

The school noted that the all the 33 arrested persons have been transferred to the Central Region Police Command and have been granted bail while investigations continue.

Speaking to UniversNews on the matter, UCC Acting Head of Public Affairs, Kwabena Antwi Konadu, said that the University was not going to, in any way, interfere with the investigations of the police.

He said that even though the University had a responsibility to protect its students, it must allow the law take its course.

“We wouldn’t interfere with the criminal investigations of the police. That does not mean that the other side of it: if you have gone against the regulations of the University we wouldn’t activate that but we will come out at the appropriate time. They have not being given any charge because the case is still under investigation. The police would want to be given time thinking of the laws of the land to do their investigation,” Kwabena Antwi Konadu said.

He also disclosed that the arrested persons are also suspected to have been involved in February’s ATL-Oguaa Hall clash which left school properties vandalized and some students injured.

Kwabena Antwi Konadu added that the Police are saying that the names of some of the arrested persons match with others on their wanted list as persons involved in the violent clash.

The arrest of the 33 persons was made on Saturday, February 29, 2020 on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus.

The suspects were rounded up at the university, during the climax of a hall week celebration by students of the Unity Hall of the KNUST.
