Accra, Jan. 22 GNA - Ms Lydia Osei, Deputy Director - General of the Ghana Education Service, on Thursday called on Ghanaians not to create the impression that art was a subject for weak students. She said art rather afforded people the opportunity to unearth their hidden talents to bring out the creativity in them.
Ms Osei said this when she formally opened the Unilever Schools Art Exhibition held at the National Theatre in Accra.
The exhibition held by Unilever after it had received all the art works from the previous three competitions was aimed at generating the children's interest in Art as a subject and to enable them to appreciate their environment.
Ms Osei said the introduction of art competition for school children throughout the country had helped to reinforce the link between information and art as a means of adding variety and scope to the perception of art among children.
She said the theme: "Water" for the 2003 competition was most appropriate adding that water was very essential and it was important that all learnt about its efficient usage.
"I am very confident that the work of the children, who participated in the competition presented variations of the theme, which reflected their appreciation of the importance of water."
Ms Vicky Wireko, Corporate Relations Manager of Unilever, Ghana said a total of 101 school children from all over the country produced 233 paintings.
