Artist jailed one day for using narcotic drug

An Accra Circuit Court on Thursday sentenced an Artist, Adnan Saani to a day’s imprisonment for using one wrap of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp without lawful authority.

Adnan who was convicted on his own plea is also to pay a fine of GH?2,400.00 or in default serve one year in prison in hard labour.

The court presided over by Mr Aboagye Tandor in sentencing him, said it took into consideration the convicts plea for mitigation, the two and half months spent in custody and the quantity of the narcotic substance.

It ordered the investigator to destroy the substance in the presence of the court registrar.

Prosecuting Chief Superintendent of Police, Duuti Tuaruka told the court that the complainants were police officers stationed at Amasaman, while the convict is an Artist and lives at Pokuase.

He said on December 23, 2015 at about 08:00 hours the Amasaman police embarked on a special operation to track down wee peddlers. They visited Sonitra area and in the course of the operation, they discovered some quantity of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp in an uncompleted building.

The prosecution said the operation continued to Pokuase cemetery and its environs, where Adnan who was seen on one of the graves at the cemetery smoking was immediately arrested and one wrap retrieved from him.

Chief Superintendent of Police, Tuaruka said the exhibit was forwarded to the police forensic laboratory, and the results proved that it was a narcotic drug.
