Mampong (Ash), April 26, GNA - Ten citizens of Asante-Mampong who have distinguished themselves in various disciplines were honoured by the Mampong Traditional Council last Saturday.

They each received a certificate of honour. They include Professor E. Yeboah Sarfo, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the late Dr. J.H. Frimpong-Ansah, former governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Edward Dwemoh, first Director-General of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, and Mr R.R. Amponsah, a veteran politician.

Others are Professor J.H. Nketia of the Institute of African Studies, Mrs Janet Gyimah-Kessie of the Bank of Ghana, the late Nana Akosa Brempong, Odikro of Benim, Nana Obrako Sarpong Kumankuma, Saanahene and a businessman, Mr Akwasi Ampofo Adjei, musician, and Madam Yaa Adusa, exponent of Asante Nnwomkro.

The Presbyterian and Anglican Churches were also presented with certificates for their pioneering role in education and evangelism in Mampong. Also honoured was the World Vision International (WVO) for assisting rural communities.

Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, Mamponghene, said the honour was a challenge to the present generation to enable them to aspire to greater pursuits. "Any community or nation that does not honour its heroes is not worth dying for, hence the decision of the Mampong Traditional Council to honour its heroes."

Prof. Sarfo, on behalf of the recipients, expressed delight at the honour bestowed on them. He said it was gratifying that the Council had appreciated the roles they had played. He advocated the institution of an educational fund for needy but brilliant students. An appeal for funds in aid of development projects yielded 30 million cedis.
