Asantehene arrives in Accra to visit Rawlings

Accra, June 18, GNA - The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, arrived in Accra on Friday to pay an official visit to the President and the government. Otumfuo was accompanied by Mr Kojo Yankah, Ashanti Regional Minister, 21 chiefs and immediate retinue of the Manhyia Palace.

The visit is to express his appreciation to the government for the financial and moral assistance it gave to the late Otumfuo Opoku Ware II during his medical treatment in London, his death and burial.

It is also to officially thank the government and people of Ghana for their support during his enstoolment as the 16th occupant of the Asante Golden Stool.

The culture of the Ashantis was displayed in its best form at the forecourt of the VVIP lounge of the Kotoka International Airport when the aircraft carrying Otumfuo and his entourage touched down.

Drumming and dancing, amidst the blowing of horns, heralded the Asantehene as he descended the gangway.

There were loud applauds and people waved white handkerchiefs to signify their admiration and support for the new chief.

There was also a large crowd of Ashantis, paramount chiefs, members of parliament and government officials, including Nana Akuoko Sarpong, Presidential Staffer on Chieftaincy Affairs and Omanhene of Agogo.

Speaking to reporters, Mr Kojo Yankah described the visit as historic and said it will strengthen the relations between Manhyia and central government.
