Asanteman informs Presidency about death of Asantehemaa

A powerful delegation of Asanteman traditional council, has officially informed the presidency, as custom demands, about the demise of its queenmother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

Acheamehene Nana Nsuase Poku Agyeman, who informed the presidency about the death of the late Asantehemaa said she reigned for 39 years.

The Vice President Kwesi Amissah-Arthur however eulogised the late Queenmother of the Ashanti Kingdom who died aged 111years when the delegation paid a courtesy call on him.

Mr Amissah-Arthur said the entire nation has lost a pillar of peace, unity and stability .The Vice President said she was a mother not just for Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Ashanti but for the entire nation so she needs to be celebrated because of the stabilising role she has played in the chieftaincy institution in the country.

Mr Amissah Arthur said the entire nation is with Asanteman in mourning the late queenmother whom he described as an exemplary most Ghanaians must emulate. He said President Mahama sees her as mother and a pillar and that the loss is a big blow to him.

He said government is with them and would join in the one week observation on Thursday and it would be led by President Mahama. The leadership of the delegation thanked government for being with them in such a time and for respecting the traditions of Asanteman by adhering to it.

Following the death, the Chief of Staff who was in the region suspended his campaign and was the first political personality to call on them to greet the Asanteman as a sign of respect.
