The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency office at Asesewa in the Upper Manya constituency in the eastern region was vandalized by some angry but unprovoked youths in the constituency on Thursday 12th may 2011 at 16:30pm.
The constituency office which has just seen its first renovation since 1991 awaiting handing over, is supposed to be a model party office wealth emulation by other constituencies, was destroyed out of jealousy and envy by tugs acting under instruct form unknown persons.
According to the constituency secretary Mr. Frederic Keni Abaitey, item destroyed includes, a split air condition, table top fridge, office and plastic chairs, fan and the paintings embossed with the party’s colours and symbols.
According to the constituency secretary, the youths acted without provocation from any quarter to merit the act.
He explained that, they (constituency executives) got the hit that some sections of the youth are not happy because they have allowed Mr. Jeff Kavienu, who has clear intentions to contest the sitting Member of Parliament to renovate the constituency office, without consulting Hon. Stephen Amoanor Kwao, who is also a minister of state at the office of the president.
Speaking out of total shock and dismay, the constituency chairman Rev. H K Sackitey lamented that the constituency office since its creation in 1991 has never seen a face lift until Mr. Jeff Kavienu a contacted based at Koforidua volunteered to renovate the office with new roofing sheets with plastic shilling, floor tiles, and fitted with modern communication gadgets including DSTV, fridge, plastic chairs and air condition.
Rev. H.K Sackity said, the frontage of the NDC office every evening has become the rallying point for the youth and other persons in Asesewa, with the only opportunity to watch live sports and other international events on DStv, which according to him is a plus for the NDC in the constituency to win the hearts of the youth.
Rev. Rev. H K Sackitey said, the Upper Manya constituency executives have reported the incident to the Asesewa police and those who perpetrated that act will be caught and prosecuted by the police.
Speaking in an interview in reaction of the situation, Hon. Stephen Amoanor Kwao, the Member of Parliament of the area whose supporters perpetrated the act said, he is not aware and has not sanctioned the incident.
According to Hon. Stephen Amoanor Kwao who is also a former minister of Employment and Social Welfare under this administration, said, though he is aware that someone (referring to Jeff Kavienu) has renovated the constituency office and put his name on it, he is in Accra at his office at the Castle Osu, therefore has not sanction any youth group to vandalized the office, adding that he will place a call to his supports in the constituency to ascertain the truthfulness of the matter.
