A 27-Year-old suspected thief was last Thursday severely flogged by unidentified persons near the Ashaiman traffic light for allegedly stealing a motorbike.

The suspected thief who mentioned his name as Emmanuel Dogbe, a resident of Christian Village, an Ashaiman suburb, was reported to have stolen a motorbike belonging to a commercial motorbike rider, popularly known as ‘Okada boy’ when he was apprehended and beaten by some angry Okada boys and aggressive youth in the area.

According to some eyewitnesses, the suspected thief went to the said area to steal the motorbike parked around the traffic light where the Okada boys had virtually turned into Okada station.

Luck, however, eluded Emmanuel who was spotted by one of the Okada boys while he was inaudibly pushing the motorbike away. He raised the alarm which drew the attention of other riders and some vigilant youth.

He was said to have been subjected to severe beating which resulting in injuries to his head and most parts of his body. A sharp object was also used to inflict wounds on his head before he was dumped in a drain to die.

DAILY GUIDE arrived at the scene just before he was removed from the gutter with his wet black jacket, pair of trousers and canvass to match. Emmanuel then pleaded with the crowd that had gathered to catch a glimpse of him, to send him to hospital.

Iddrisu Aliu Maliaga, Unit Committee Member for Tulaku Electoral Area expressed worry about the manner the angry mob meted out instant justice to the alleged thief, saying that such acts could undermine the ability of the police to carry out successful investigation into the matter.

He, therefore, urged people to desist from flogging suspects, some of whom, he said, could be innocent, adding that “we should rather report such incidents to the police for the law to take its course. At as press time, the Ashaiman Police were yet to visit the scene to begin investigations.
