Kumasi, Sept. 18, GNA - The Ashanti Regional branch of the Convention People's Party (CPP) has commended President John Atta Mills on his bold initiative to immortalize the achievements, spirit and personality of late President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

It said "President Mills deserves credit for taking steps to institutionalize the birthday of Osagyefo Dr Nkrumah as a national holiday and the rehabilitation of museums, monuments and other memorabilia as a way of keeping the spirit, soul and philosophy of Dr Nkrumah alive."

This was contained in a statement signed by Mr Akwasi Bosompem Boateng, the Party's Regional Secretary in Kumasi. The statement said Prof Mills had exhibited high and genuine respect for the late President.

It said it would also be appropriate if a formal traditional funeral rite was performed for the first President as part of the centenary celebrations and called for collaboration among the government, the CPP and the family to explore the possibility of doing this to make Dr Nkrumah "rest peacefully."

The statement appealed to President Mills to consider re-naming the Kotoka International Airport after Dr Nkrumah. It reminded members of the Nkrumaist tradition that what the CPP would have done in power to promote the image and achievements of Osagyefo Dr Nkrumah is exactly what the NDC is doing. The party called on members to be steadfast and unite in the struggle to re-capture political power in future elections. 18 Sept 09
