Asirifi elected NDC Parliamentary candidate for Abuakwa North

New Tafo(ER), Feb. 23, GNA - Mr Simon Peter Asirifi, National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2004 Parliamentary candidate for Abuakwa North Constituency, was on Friday endorsed by popular acclamation as the Party's candidate for 2008.

By the close of nominations, Mr Asirifi was the only candidate who had filed his nomination and was therefore declare unopposed.

In 2004, Mr Asirifi polled 7,596 votes as against 16,027 votes by Mr J. B. Danquah-Adu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and incumbent Member of Parliament for the constituency.

Mr Bismark Tawiah-Boateng, Eastern Regional Organiser of NDC, addressing the delegates appealed to the NPP not to abuse its incumbency to the detriment of other political parties.

Mr Anthony Gyampoh, Eastern Regional Secretary of NDC, urged activists and sympathizers of the party to gird their loins for the task ahead to win the 2008 elections.

He appealed to them to endeavour to avoid clashes that had characterised elections in the constituency since 1992 when the constituency was part of Abuakwa Constituency, until Abuakwa South Constituency was created in 2004.

Ms Evelyn Korang, Eastern Regional Women's Organizer of the Party, said Ghana needed a political leader without blemish. She called on women activists of the Party to defend its achievements in their communities to give Ghanaians the opportunity to compare them with that of the NPP government to make their choice.
