Kumasi, March 20, GNA - The Ho-Asogli State in the Volta Region in its bid to help make quality education more accessible to children of the Region, has initiated an educational fund, which has been scheduled for official launching at the end of this month.
Togbe Afede XIV, Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, who announced this said the fund, would help address the educational needs especially of needy but brilliant children whilst also facilitating government efforts at developing education in the Region.
He announced this at a meeting with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace and also at a forum he held with members of the Ashanti Region branch of the Voltarian Co-ordinating Council (VCC) at the Silicon Hotel in Kumasi on Friday.
The one-day visit of the Agbogbemefia to the Ashanti Region formed part of his programme of touring the various traditional councils in the country and also meeting with Voltarians resident in other parts of the country to brief them on developments back home.
Togbe Afede appealed to citizens of the Volta Region, corporate bodies and philanthropists to contribute in kind and cash to enable the Council to raise the relevant capital for the implementation of the fund.
Earlier, the Asantehene commended Togbe Afede and the Asogli Traditional Council for taking such a step in initiating an educational fund, which he described as prudent.
He said it behoved traditional rulers to be development-oriented since the era when chiefs used to be pre-occupied with wars were over. Otumfuo Osei Tutu donated 100 million cedis as seed money towards launching of the fund.
Later in his interaction with members of the VCC, Togbe Afede entreated Voltarians living in the Diaspora to strive to commit resources to development of the Volta Region in an effort to help improve the situation there.
He advised the people to eschew ethnicity and strive to live in harmony with their hosts wherever they reside. Togbe S.K. Fugah, chairman of the VCC, disclosed that the Council had earmarked funds for the establishment of an FM station in the Ashanti Region.
