... and seizes her car

A Kumasi businessman, Mr. Charles Hagan, who is contesting the Parliamentary elections as an independent candidate for the Subin constituency in Kumasi has breached the law.

The Women and Juvenile Unit (WAJU) of the Ghana Police Service is investigating a case of assault brought against him by his wife of 10 years.

Hagan who is in his fifties, has been granted bail, pending further investigations by the police but would be made to face the full rigours of the law if a true case of assault is established, a police source has told The Chronicle.

Ms. Angela Acheampong, a half-caste of Russian and Ghanaian parentage, spotting bruises on her body on November 5, 2004, lodged a complaint with the WAJU, claiming her husband, Hagan who had seized her private car, had assaulted her.

The source said the car had, since Sunday November 7, 2004, been returned to Angela following police intervention after it had been established that it was the bonafide property of Angela.

In a statement to the police, Angela complained that at about 7 am on the day in question, her husband assaulted her, following a misunderstanding.

In a caution statement to the police, Hagan said he only rushed on her to prevent her from causing damage to personal effects in the house and claimed he had even had his chest bitten in the ensuing struggle.

He stated also that his wife had rained insults on him. The couple has been issued with police medical form for treatment, but while Angela had gone for treatment and reported back to the police, Hagan had not done so at the time of filing this report.

Investigations have revealed that on November 4, 2004, Angela returned from Accra after visiting the French Embassy for visa formalities but did not meet her husband at home.

At about 1pm, Hagan came home, changed clothes and left without a word to his wife. He did not return until the following day.

When his wife queried him, the aspiring parliamentarian took offence. In the ensuing exchanges, Angela is reported to have entered the bedroom and started removing Hagan's clothing out of the wardrobe. Hagan tried to prevent her from carrying out this ejection threat and in the ensuing conflict, assaulted her.

Further Police investigations have unveiled that Hagan joined Angela in her rented apartment at H/No 79 at Odeneho Kwadaso, a suburb of Kumasi when they married 10 years ago. They have two issues but Angela allegedly considers the marriage as an improper one because no proper rites had been performed to that effect and the consent of her parents had not been received.
