Assemblies asked to enforce environmental sanitation

Kenyase (Ash), Jan 09, GNA - Dr Kwasi Yeboah-Awudzi, Kwabre District Director of Health Services, has called on district assemblies to support the health service to combat environmental sanitation problems in the districts.

He said without that clinics, hospitals and other health facilities would not be able to eradicate common diseases no matter the amount of work health officers provided.

Dr Yeboah-Awudzi was speaking at an end-of-year get-together and award ceremony organised by the Kwabre District Health management Team (DHMT) of the Ghana Health Service at Kenyase in Ashanti on Friday. He said environmental sanitation reports reaching his office were not impressive and stressed the need for district assemblies to demarcate refuse disposing sites and enforce bye-laws so that people who dispose refuse indiscriminately could be prosecuted.

The director praised the health workers for working hard to ensure quick and quality health delivery service during the year and expressed the hope that they would continue to promote health delivery. He also congratulated the district assembly for providing health infrastructure.

Dr Yeboah-Awudzi said efforts were being made by the DHMT to provide computers for all the sub-district clinics and hospitals and absorb the rents of those in rented private houses. He said the DHMT would do more to provide motivating packages for staffers in the years ahead.

Nana Oduro Agyeman, Kenyase Nkosuohene who represented Barima Owusu Agyeman, chief of Kenyase, commended the award winners and urged them to continue to work harder.

Nine health workers including two Cuban doctors were honoured. Mr Benjamin Obeng-Kyei, a Senior Medical Assistant at Aboaso Hospital who had worked in the district for 10 years had a standing refrigerator. Mr Obeng-Kyei, who spoke on behalf of the other award winners, said during the period he was able to raise over 80 million cedis from the meagre funds collected at the hospital to build a bungalow for the hospital.

Miss Leticia Anti, a Superintendent Enrolled Nurse also at the Aboaso Hospital who had worked in the district for 21 years received a 21-inch colour television set.

Madam Gladys Amoah, a midwife at Aboaso was adjudged the best midwife in the district while Miss Esther Kokroko, a Senior Ward Assistant at Aboaso, was adjudged the best ward assistant in the district.

The best general nurse award went to Miss Veronica Antwi, a Superintendent Enrolled Nurse at Asonomaso Hospital and the best field technician in the district award went to Madam Faustina Arthur, food technician and disease control officer.

Mr Abanga Yacubu, a revenue collector at Kenyase health centre was adjudged the best orderly in the district.

They all received a certificate and a piece of cloth. The DHMT honoured the two Cuban doctors, Dr Ana Aginla Paradela and Dr Miguel Lepen Magana. They were given one million cedis each. 09 Dec 05
