Assembly embarks on clean-up exercise

The La-Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly (LaNMMA) on Saturday embarked on a four-hour clean-up exercise as part of the 12th National Sanitation Day within the Municipality.

The exercise began around 6.00 a.m, and the areas covered during the exercise included Madina-Zongo, VRA/Abokobi lorry stations, Madina Central Market, North Legon, from the Zongo-Junction to the Social Welfare, and from Madina Taxi Rank to Rawlings Circle, all suburbs of Madina.

Gutters were desilted by the LaNMMA Desilting Gang.

Weeding and collection of waste materials were carried out by the Madina Market Women, roadside traders, including the LaNMMA Staff.

During the exercise, 18 traders were arrested by the Joint Sanitation Task Force at the Madina Central Market, for refusing to participate in the exercise, and each was fined GHc 100.

A woman who misconducted herself and became violent and rude in her behaviour towards the Joint LaNMMA Task Force was arrested and detained at the Madina Police Station, but was later cautioned and discharged.

In a related development, members of the North Legon Residents Association led by Mr. Edward Addotey with 60 participants also organized a four-hour clean-up exercise within their residence.

Madam Gloria Akuffo told the Ghana News Agency that it was the third time they were participating in the exercise.

Madam Akuffo said LaNMMA supplied them with equipment for the exercise.

The Madina branch of the Presbyterian Church in collaboration with the Madina Zongo Muslim Community led by Mr. Francis Affoh, Co-ordinator of Ecumenical and Social Relations, organized a similar exercise in the Madina-Zongo township, with assistance from personnel of the Madina branch of the Ghana Fire Service..

Mr. Affoh told the GNA that the exercise was to assist Christians and Muslims to promote unity and brotherly love. He added that it was the second time that this had happened.
