Bolgatanga (UE), May 22, GNA - Mr. Alexis Ayamdor, Assemblyman for the Zorko Kanga Electoral area in the Bongo District of the Upper East Region, has underscored the need for the Constitutional Review Commission to review the remuneration package of assembly members.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga on Saturday, Mr. Ayamdor explained that viewing the numerous responsibilities of assembly members, it was crucial to review the remuneration package for assembly members to motivate them discharge their duties diligently. He stated that as assembly members promulgate laws, support budget planning and its implementation process, mobilize community members, convene meetings in communities and serve as liaison officers between the communities and the assembly and that demanded more commitment in terms of resources.

He indicated that assembly members were the pillars of the decentralization process and if Government wanted it to be effectively implemented, assembly members had to be empowered properly to enable them discharge their duties efficiently. He suggested that assembly members should be given special monthly responsibility allowances, which should emanate from the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF).

Mr. Ayamdor suggested that the Constitutional Review should also consider making it possible for assembly members to be paid ex-gratia award after their e tenure in office as that would help attract more competent people to contribute towards the development of the assemblies. 23 May 10
