Assembly members urged to adopt ways to improve sanitary conditions Assembly members of the Asene Manso Akroso District of the Eastern region has been urged to adopt strategies to improve sanitation and waste management practices in their respective electoral areas.

This measure would among other things help strengthen sanitation and waste management activities in their area of operation to avert any outbreak of diseases related to insanitary conditions.

The advice was given by the District Chief Executive of the Asene Manso Akroso, Mr Alex Incoom at the first ordinary meeting of the second session of the Assembly at Akyem Manso on Wednesday.

Mr Incoom observed that most people indulged in improper sanitation practices because they lack knowledge about the Assembly’s by-laws adding that the Assembly members must own it a duty to explain the sanitation by-laws of the Assembly to such people to help tackle the sanitation problems in the District.

According to him sanitation and waste management has become a nagging issue for many Assemblies and however called on the Assembly members to intensify sensitization on the by-laws to make the people more informed about the laws.

Mr Incoom enumerated some measure that are being implemented by the Assembly to curb sanitary situation in the area as; the ongoing construction of Clean Ghana 30 ultra-modern toilet facilities, distribution of 11 refuse containers and 30 dustbins to some institutions and communities across the District.

The rest are, the contract agreement of Zoomlion Ghana Limited to evacuate some mountainous refuse sites in the District, the development of a new dumping site at Akroso and the assessment of more than 20 mechanized boreholes in 10 communities.

Touching on the increase in fall army worm infestation, the DCE disclosed that more than hundred farmers have been affected in the first quarter of the year 2019 as compare to same period last year.

“Hon. Presiding Member, it is sad to note that fall army worm infestation this year has been on the increase as compare to same period last year. In the first quarter of 2019, a total of 47 liters of Adepa Agro and 48 liters of Eradicoat T. were received from the regional Directorate for distribution to a total of 162 affected farmers made up of 110 males and 52 females”, he said.

Mr Incoom was hopeful that with the continuous sensitization of farmers on the proper application of the chemicals the effect of the situation would be brought to the barest minimum.
