Space FM,Sunyani, July 31- The Assemblymember for the Awuah Electoral Area, Hon. Richard Agyemeng Badu, has observed that the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and other government agencies and departments, have failed in performing their duties. Hon. Agyemang Badu told Space FM in Sunyani that "from 1996 to date, the NCCE for instance has failed to adequately educate citizens on their civic rights and responsibilities leaving the workload on Assemblymembers".

He explained that there are certain basic rights and responsibilities citizens should know but the body mandated to educate people on them are not doing so.

The Assemblymember noted the NCCE did not do much education on the recent introduction of the new Ghana cedi which is important to the nation.

"There are many Ghanaians who do not understand the redenomination of the cedi and it is up to the NCCE to educate them to appreciate the policy", he said.

He added that there is another crucial national programme, the National Identification excercise coming up, but the NCCE has done nothing to educate Ghanaians on its importance. Hon. Agyemang Badu also blamed health authorities for not doing enough to educate the public on preventive health measures. He said malaria, which is a common disease coud be checked through proper sanitation but sanitation officials have failed to execute their mandate in ensuring a clean environment.

Hon. Agyemeang Badu urged health officials to embark on constant health education programmes on radio, TV and in the newspapers to sensitize citizens on the need to keep clean environment to avoid diseases which affect the health and economy of the nation.

The Assemblyman also charged police officers to inspect all vehicles for their road worthiness to prevent certain accidents. He was worried that instead of the police ensuring sanity on the road, they rather relish collecting illegal fees from drivers.

He noted that because the drivers do not know their rights and responsibilities, they also pay these illegal fees to the police who are supposed to protect citizens from dubious characters. He therefore appealed to the police to live up to their motto of "Service With Intergrity".
