Asset declaration won't curb corruption - Freddie Blay

The First National vice chairperson of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Freddie Blay has challenged claims that asset declaration by public officials will automatically check corruption in society.

Anti-corruption campaigners have continually advocated for stringent measures to compel all public servants to declare their assets before assuming positions.

But speaking to Starr News the former Elembele MP said politicians who are corrupt minded will always find ways to be corrupt regardless of the laws in place.

He is rather asking for parliament to be strengthened to check the Executive against graft.

“We have been declaring assets in the past but still people find ways to circumvent the system and so it’s no more an interesting way of fighting corruption.

“We need to empower the public accounts committee and the auditor general to enable them do their work well; let’s not treat them as joke,” he said.
