Municipal Chief Executive for Assin North, Fifi Baako has taken the center stage after he forced an Egyptian couple to sweep the entire lorry station in the town for indiscriminate littering.
He explained that Mohammed Fatari and Fatima Nah were made to sweep the lorry station “to serve as a deterrent to those who have such offences in mind”.
The couple who were travelling in a taxi in the town Monday were said to have threw out garbage at the Assin Fosu railway bridge where a clean-up exercise was at the time taking place in the area.
The Municipal Environmental Officer and some residents arrested the two and taken the police station, but the Assembly resolved to make the two clean up the Assin Fosu lorry station to serve as deterrent to others.
Speaking on 3FM, the MCE said going forward, a lot of prosecutions would be considered while the culprits would be made to help in the Assembly’s education campaign against such acts.
He observed the sanitation situation within the municipality had improved because of education and the conscious effort made to clean the environment every two months.
Mr. Baako added that the Assembly has initiated a campaign aimed at warning people against littering.
He said there are about 15 sanitation marshals conducting checks to ensure cleanliness in the community.
According to Mr. Baako, although government promised them sanitation marshals during the launch of the national sanitation day, they are yet to be assigned these persons.
He said they have thus had to use their own personnel to keep an eye on the sanitation situation within the municipality.
“…We were waiting for signals and just last two weeks, they asked us to bring the list of those who are now working and the number that we would need, so we have sent it to the ministry.”
