Assin South District celebrates independence

Assin Nsuaem (C/R), March 06, GNA - The 48th independence anniversary celebration at Nsuaem-Kyekyewere, the capital of the newly created Assin South District, was heavily attended with more than 700 students and pupils taking part in the anniversary parade. Besides the usual march past, there was also a spectacular cultural dance performance by the school children dressed in traditional dresses.

Chiefs and prominent citizens of the area, who graced the occasion, could not help but shower gifts of money on the dancers. Most people the GNA talked to at the function said the heavy attendance was due to the fact that the parade was the first of its kind to be held since the creation of the district.

In an address read for President J.A. Kufuor, the Minister of Lands, Forestry and Mines, Professor Dominic Fobih, stressed the need for every stakeholder within the body politic to operate within the law, even as they pursue their rights and freedoms, so as to promote peace and orderly development of the country.

He noted that for democracy to thrive, people must recognise their constitutional limits and play their defined roles in consonance with the checks and balances inherent in democratic governance.

Prof Fobih, who is also the member of parliament for Assin South constituency, expressed concern over some pronouncements and deeds of the media, which make them lapse into indiscretion and often find themselves violating the rights of others and that of the state. He said democracy could be sustained to promote peace and unity when all individuals, groups and organisations subsume their sectional and parochial interests under the overall national good.

All the 15 schools, made up of first-cycle and second-cycle schools, which participated in the anniversary parade, were awarded with prizes, based on merit, comprising wall clocks, exercise books, plastic washing basins and napkins.
