PNC General Secretary, Atik Mohammed has supported calls on the Electoral Commission to begin registration exercise for the compilation of a new voters' register.

The Electoral Commission (EC) was expected to hold the exercise on Saturday, April 18, 2020 but postponed it to a later date due to the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus in the country.

In conformity with the restrictions on public gatherings and partial lockdown in the country, the EC has still not been able to undertake the voters' registration exercise, but since the lockdown has been lifted, there are suggestions for the Commission to go ahead with the exercise.

Addressing the issue on Thursday's 'Kokrokoo' on Peace FM, Atik Mohammed rooted for those calling on the EC to commence the exercise but must ensure the safety of the Ghanaian electorates who attend the registration centres.

He said the Commission should first make available adequate Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) for their officials and the electorates, enforce the social distancing order and the wearing of nose masks as well as ensuring the electorates strictly adhere to all the preventive protocols before they are allowed to exercise their right to register.

To him, the EC is good to do the registration exercise if only they can protect the electorates and prevent transmissions of the disease.

''We can have an exercise that will smooth, that at the same time will assure of the safety of the Ghanaian electorates',' he stated.
