Atiwa Assembly will not tolerate lazy contractors

Kwabeng (E/R), Dec 30, GNA - The Atiwa District Assembly in the Eastern Region had warned that it would not tolerate lazy contractors who would delay the execution of contracts thereby undermining the development of the area.

As a new assembly, it would strictly comply with laid down regulations in the award and monitoring of contracts in order to obtain value for investment made in projects. Mr Kwasi Amoako-Atta, Presiding Member of the Assembly, gave the warning at the Assembly's Second Ordinary meeting at Kwabeng on Wednesday.

He appealed to the assembly members to bury their political differences now that the elections were over and work as a team towards the development of the area. Mr Amoako-Atta introduced the solicitor of the Assembly, Mr Kwame Boateng to the members and assured them that the assembly would offer them legal aid in any case in relating to the lawful discharge of their duties.

Dr Francis Osafo-Mensah, Eastern Regional Minister, in a speech read for him, deplored the low revenue base of the assembly, saying between August and November, only 41,966,000 million cedis were collected.

He said the assembly would initiate pragmatic measures to enable it to generate more revenue for the development of the district. Dr Osafo-Mensah, who is also acting Chief Executive of the District, announced that the assembly had received over 2.5 billion cedis as its share of the Common Fund for the three quarters of this year, while 790 million cedis came from the HPIC Fund for various projects.

He said contracts had been awarded for the rehabilitation of a number of feeder roads and urged the assembly to monitor the execution of the projects to ensure their proper implementation.
