Atta Mills Gives To Flood Victims

Former Vice President, John Evans Atta Mills, visiting parts of the Upper East Region devastated by the recent floods, has donated 330 maxi bags of maize and 100 million cedis to support the government’s effort at providing relief items to those who have suffered adversely from the floods.

Making the presentation to the Upper East Regional Minister, Alhassan Samari last Friday, the NDC Presidential Candidate said that what has happened to the people of the Region was of great concern to the country because of the primary and secondary effect of what has happened.

The NDC Presidential Candidate such disasters are things that nobody wishes to befall a nation but when they do occur, it is incumbent an all and sundry to shelve all other considerations and make sure the prime focus of the nation, is, how to alleviate the plight of the less fortunate.

“Government is doing the best that it can but we know that in times like these, we must all put our shoulders to the wheel that is why Atta Mills and the NDC cannot sit idly by and say that it is the sole responsibility of the government to come to the aid of the people hence the contribution that we are making” Atta Mills said.

“In times like these, it is about Ghanaians first, before any other consideration and I hope that all efforts at lessening the pain of those in distress would cut across partisan lines” the NDC Presidential Candidate added.

John Evans Atta Mills said that he was in no way underestimating the task confronting the Regional Minister and his government but said that he was hopeful that with the zeal to succeed, what has to be done, would be done.

“I know that the task ahead is not going to be an easy one but with determination and a commitment to help our brothers and sisters who have suffered adversely from the floods, all of us should all be able to help manage the situation to the best of our abilities” Atta Mills concluded.

The NDC Presidential Candidate assured the Upper East Regional Minister that he would personally continue to make appeals to individuals and organizations within and without the borders of the country to come to aid of the disaster victims.

Mr. Alhassan Samari on behalf of the Upper East Region, thanked the former Vice President for his show of concern for the region in general and the affected persons in particular and said that by the gesture, John Evans Atta Mills has shown that he is a true statesman who knows when to rise above partisan considerations.

“Your coming here at this time is very appropriate and your donation is also very welcomed. What you are doing today is a clear manifestation that in times of disaster we must put away our political colouration and come together as one people and so on behalf the people of the Upper East Region, I thank you for your kind gesture. You are a true statesman and what you have done is worthy of emulation” the Regional Minister said.

John Evans Atta Mills was accompanied by Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, Hon Moses Asaga, MP Talensi Nabdam, Hon Abuga Pele, MP Chiana Paga, Hon Mahama Ayariga, MP, Bawku Central, Hon Abdul Rauf Tanko, MP, Yagaba Kubori, Mr. Donald Adabre, former Upper East Regional Minister in the NDC regime, and the Upper East Regional Executives of the NDC.

The floods have washed away roads and bridges, destroyed houses, destroyed farms and farmlands, and claimed some human life.
