Authorities asked to ensure principles of transparency and accountability

The District Chief Executive for Jomoro, Mr. Sylvester N. Daddieh, has asked people in leadership positions to let the principles of transparency and accountability bee their watch word in the discharge of their duties.

The DCE said this at a public forum held with the theme: “Institutionalizing Participatory Governance: Stimulating Citizens Participation for Transparency and Accountability” at Half Assini.

It was organised by Network for Community Development Planning (NECTAD) an NGO and sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) under its Governance and Decentralization Programme.

A cross-section of people including Assembly members, market women, fishermen, traditional rulers and opinion leaders from the district attended.

Mr. Daddieh said sometimes revolutions and upheavals in certain communities and organizations against their leaders were due to the lack of accountability and transparency on the part of those in authority to their subordinates.

Mr. Daddieh said the current political dispensation in the country required probity and accountability, rule of law and good governance.

He asked Ghanaians to do their best to cherish peaceful atmosphere currently prevailing in the country for total development.

The executive director of NECTAD, Mr. Paul Asamoah Kukwaw, said USAID's decentralization programme is aimed at supporting good governance, through the provision of innovative and practical solutions to governance challenges in the Region.

He said after almost twenty years in the country’s decentralization process, the Western Region still faced some challenges, including limited information flow between the citizens and local government, inadequate resources for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to institutionalize popular participation in local governance.
