Avoid going to bed immediately after eating - Prof. Badu Akosa reiterates

Renowned Pathologist, Professor Agyeman Badu Akosa, has noted that going to sleep immediately after eating interrupts digestion process greatly and must therefore be avoided.

He said the right thing to do is to stay awake for at least two hours before going to bed, “as soon as you sleep the body switches to the parasympathetic system, and in this system, digestion does not take place” he stressed.

He said when people sleep immediately after eating; the undigested food which contains hydrochloric acid, moves back into the gullet and that can cause problems for the food passage.

Prof. Akosa made these comments on the #StayAlive segment of HSTV’s Morning Show,#HealthyMorning, talking to Cecil Lee Longdon about the functions of the Gastrointestinal tract, its importance and how it can be maintained healthily He said the primary function of the gastrointestinal tract is to receive food and make use of the food, but it is also a complex system which serves as the body’s source of energy.
