Ayawaso West Wuogon shooting: IGP must resign - Peter Otukonor

Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Otukonor has called for the resignation of Inspector of Police (IGP), David Asante-Apeatu over the Ayawaso West Wuogon shooting incidence that occurred on Thursday.

Six people are said to have been shot at the Bawaleshie polling centre, where the by-election is being held and have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.

Speaking to the media after the Press conference which was held at the party’s (NDC) headquarters, Mr Otukonor said “The IGP by now should be resigning. He should be writing his resignation letter because this is a democracy we’ve protected over the years and the Nana Akufo-Addo administration and the IGP cannot roll this democratic gains back into the old days”.

Following the shooting incidence that took place at one of the polling centres, the NDC has withdrawn from the elections because they believe democratic systems in the country have been thwarted.

Adding that, the NDC would have to protect their members and party agents and whatever may be the outcome, President Akufo-Addo and the security agencies would have to take the responsibility for their actions yet to be taken.

“We are saying that we have withdrawn from the elections today particularly because we think the systems have failed. The democratic systems have failed, the state institutions that is to protect live and property have failed and for that matter, we may have to protect ourselves, we may have to protect our people and the President and security agencies should take responsibility for anything that happens next”, Mr Otukonor stated.



Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo revealed that, the securities on the polling grounds are neither policemen nor the military but are men in black shirts in national security tags.

He further stated that, “There were heavy deployment of security in various polling stations and those security men were neither police nor military. They were wearing black t-shirts and were hanging national security tags around their necks. We also realized that, there were heavily armed security men who are wearing mask and we have not seen any elections were security agencies will wear mask and come to polling stations”.
