The Diocesan Administrator of the Sunyani Catholic Diocese, Reverend Monsignor George Kwame Kumi, has attributed the sub-standard performance of the 24 Members of Parliament (MPs) of the Brong Ahafo Region to what he called their low level of education.
Rev Kwame Kumi, also known in the region as Father Kwame, made that statement while preaching at a farewell ceremony organized by the St. Francis de Seles Catholic Church at Dormaa Ahenkro for Rev. Father Alex Adjapong, who was scheduled to leave for further studies in the USA last Sunday.
His voice reaching a good pitch of passion, Father Kwame said, ?When you send sub-standard people to Parliament to represent you, automatically you would reap sub-standard results.? ?My people,? he said with a preacher man?s oratory, ?You should ask yourselves, out of the 24 parliamentarians from this region?how many of them are full ministers??
Father Kwame pointed out that, ?Parliament all over the world is a big august House, which needs men and women with a high quality of educational attainment for deliberations.? Therefore, as citizens of this region, we have to be concerned about the caliber of people we send to Parliament, because we entrust the development of the region to them by doing so, he explained.
Father Kwame lambasted the region for what he termed the ?low level of education,? which he attributed to the unchecked desire of the youth in the region to become a ?Burger?. They are thus leaving the classroom to go into maize and cassava farming to make enough money to travel out so that they can return as ?Burgers?.
Making references to a current survey Father Kumi said students from the Brong Ahafo region constitute only 4 per cent of the country?s university population, saying that was deplorable for a region that has produced the likes of Dr K.A Busia, J.H Mensah ad Prof George Benneh.
Meanwhile investigations into the educational background of the 24 MPs from the region indicate that none has an educational level below ?A? level. Only one, MP for Asutifi South Constituency, Collins Dauda holds an ?A?level. It was also discovered that as high as 71 per cent of current MPs from the region are university graduates. The region has one PhD, five BAs, five BScs, one Bed, one Msc, one MBA and one PGDE.
The one with the Philosophers Degree (PhD) is Prof G.Y. Gyan ?Baffour. Those with Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree holders include Robert Sarfo-Menah, Asunafo North MP, Erick Opoku, Asunafo South MP, Ms Anna Nyamekye Jaman South and Alex Asum-Ahensah, Jaman North Constituency.
The Bachelor of Science (Bsc) degree holders include Kwadwo Adjei Darko MP for Sunyani West, Andrew Adjei Yeboah, Tano South and Felix Twumasi-Appiah MP for Sene Constituency. Minister for Food and Agriculture, Ernest Akubuor Debrah has an MBA, the Senior Minister, Joseph Henry Mensah of Sunyani East Constituency holds MSc while MP for Berekum Constituency Capt Nkrabeah Effah Dartey is a lawyer.
