Yamfo (B/A), Sept 21, GNA - Mr Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, has said environmental protection was a collective responsibility of the government and the people and appealed to traditional rulers to lead the crusade against reckless destruction of the environment.
Mr Baffour-Awuah was speaking at the Regional Celebration of the World Environment Day on the theme "Green Cities: Plan for the planet" at Yamfo on Tuesday.
The Regional theme for the celebration was "Green Communities: Conserving the Landscape".
Mr Baffour-Awuah expressed concern about advances in science and technology and this had resulted in the exploitation of natural resources without appreciating the wisdom of taking precautions to conserve and keep them viable.
He enumerated problems such as timber and wood extraction, bush burning, sand winning, stone quarrying and poor sanitation and said they had degraded and endangered the environment.
The Deputy Regional Minister said for the district and municipal assemblies to effectively address potential negative impacts of development on the environment, there was the need for them to mobilize human and material resources to implement the various environmental action plans and bye-laws.
