BECE invigilators to receive allowances owed them since 2014

Teachers and education officers who took part in the invigilation and supervision of last years' Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) would be receiving transportation fees owed them by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

This was disclosed by the deputy Director General of the GES to an Accra based radio station.

According to Mr.Stephen Adu; the GES had managed with support of the Ministry of Education to raise funds to pay all monies due to invigilators and supervisors.

He further disclosed that all cheques had been issued in the names of regional Directors of Education who are supposed to release it to those to be paid.

Teachers involved in invigilation in the Ashanti Region as at yesterday; had threatened to return to their classrooms on Thursday and Friday rather than report for invigilation; in protest of the unpaid transport fees since last year.

A supervisor in the region, Owusu Sakyi told Citi News, the money owed them from last year would come up to about GHc 33 after taxes have been deducted from the gross sum of GHc 50.

According to the Ghana News Agency, a similar threat was issued by invigilators in the Volta Region, who protested to the deputy regional Minister, Mr. Francis Ganyaglo; that until their invigilation allowances were settled by the GES, they were going to boycott the invigilation of the exams which is enters its fourth day on Thursday.

The 2015 BECE started on Monday with a total of 438,030 candidates participating.

The number of candidates represent an increase of 15,084 over last year’s figure of 422,946 final-year junior high school (JHS) students who registered for the examination.

About 13,434 basic schools, public and private, are taking part in the examination which is being written at 1,546 centres across the country.

The examination is being supervised by 1,546 supervisors and 1,466 assistant supervisors.

A total of 15,326 invigilators will be swapped in the course of the examination to take charge of the candidates.
