The transition took place during a brief ceremony at the National Police Training School
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team, popularly known as “Black Maria,” has witnessed a change in leadership.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Bawah Abdul Jalil handed over command of the team to Superintendent Augustine Dawson Amoah.
The transition took place during a brief ceremony at the National Police Training School in Accra on April 8, 2026.
In a statement shared on social media, the Ghana Police Service confirmed, “The outgoing leader of the team, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, officially handed over command responsibilities to the new Commander, Superintendent Augustine Dawson Amoah, who will be supported by three other senior officers.”
This report comes after DSP Abdul Jalil and his team were heavily criticised by the public for allegedly assaulting renowned Ghanaian visual artist and CEO of Red Clay, Ibrahim Mahama.
Ibrahim Mahama has accused the IGP's Special Operations Task Force, popularly known as the Black Maria and led by DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, of brutalising him for no reason on Friday, March 20, 2026, after Eid'l Fitr prayers in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale.
The Black Maria, in their defence, have reportedly said that they did not attack the award-winning artist, who was recently awarded a diplomatic passport by the government, but rather acted to save him from a mob.
Ibrahim Mahama, who lost some of his teeth during the attack, has rubbished the claims of the police and has insisted that they beat him up after he refused to delete visuals he took of them on the street.
