GES has refuted suggestions that it has lifted the ban imposed on PTA
The management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has refuted suggestions that it has lifted the ban imposed on Parent Teacher Association (PTA) dues and levies in public schools.
“Management of the GES wishes to make it clear that the suspension of imposition of dues/levies in all public schools is still in force and has not been lifted,” Director-General of the GES, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa, stated in a letter dated 7 May 2019.
Prof. Opoku-Amankwa added that “the imposition of any dues/levies which has the potential of denying any child access to basic education shall be unconstitutional and any such imposition shall to the extent of it being contrary to the 1992 Constitution shall be null and void and of no effect”.
This was in reaction to an announcement by the National President of PTAs, Mr. Alexander Yaw Danso that the collection of the dues is to resume following a suspension of the ban.
The announcement came after an emergency meeting of the Ashanti Regional branch of the Parent-Teacher Associations (Government Assisted Schools) held in Kumasi on April 17, 2019, to deliberate on issues affecting the Association.
Mr Danso had said that the decision was pursuant to meetings held between the Ministry of Education (MoE) and executives of the Association.
