The Agona Swedru Circuit Court has sentenced a banker, Wisdom Dasu, to serve a prison term of two years for stealing GHC 7,916 from the account of a customer of the Kasoa branch of the SB-Accion Ecobank.

The court, presided over by Mr. N.K.E Osam, convicted Dasu on his own plea of guilty to the charge of stealing.

Dasu, 25, refunded GHC 1,000 of the amount in court. The court then ordered that the money should be given to the complainant. There is now a balance of GHC 6,916 to be paid.

The prosecutor, Inspector Alfred Boatey, said on September 8, 2012, the bank detected a shortage of GHC 7,916 that was supposed to have been deposited in the account of a customer of the bank.

It came out that Dasu, a staff of the bank who was in charge of deposits, failed to record the transaction.

According to Inspector Boatey, the bank’s management took pains to maintain the customer’s account and got Dasu to agree to refund the amount under a gentleman’s agreement, but he disappeared thereafter.

Mr. George Owiredu Mensah, who is the field auditor of the bank, therefore, reported the matter to the Kasoa police.

The prosecutor said early this year, the police acting upon a tip off, traced Dasu to his hideout from where he was arrested and put before court.
