Mpraeso, July 22, GNA - Mr Alfred Osei, the Kwahu South District Director of Education, has threatened to place an embargo on salaries of head teachers of basic schools in the district by the end of July if they fail to collect 95.6 million cedis pupils owe.

Pupils in 357 public basic schools in the Kwahu South and West districts owe the amount for the 2004/2005 academic year. Mr Osei told the GNA in an interview at Mpraeso on Thursday that the fees were made up of sports, culture, endowment, trust fund and textbook levies.

He said as a result of the inability of parents to pay the fees, the district was owing 22 million cedis capitation fee to the Eastern Regional Basic Schools Sports Association. Mr Osei commended the government for absorbing school fees from next academic year and said this would ''relieve some parents of a huge burden.''
