Dr. Hassan Ayariga, the Flagbearer of the All People's Congress (APC), has urged stakeholders to find a lasting resolution to the ongoing Bawku conflict in the Upper East Region.
Speaking at the signing of the 4th Presidential Election Peace Pact in Accra on November 28, 2024, Ayariga expressed concern over the persistent insecurity in the region, emphasising the need for urgent action.
He further questioned the commitment of stakeholders to resolve the conflict, while focusing their attention on discussions about national peace.
"What kind of peace summit or pact has been organised in Bawku to find a lasting solution to the conflict? It is not just a war of words, but it is a war of guns. Shooting and killing every day at Bawku, and we don't see this as a problem in the 2024 general elections. We have ignored that, and we are talking about peace. We are not in peace. I will recommend the government find solutions to the Bawku crisis," he noted.
While acknowledging the importance of the peace pact, Ayariga stressed the need to address the root causes of the violence in Bawku.
"I am a presidential candidate, and this is where I come from. Do you think my life is not threatened by the fight between the two groups? Even though I belong to both, don’t you think one group will think I am supporting the other group, and the other group will think I am supporting one side?
"It is good to be here for the peace pact, but let's deal with the minor issues that will disturb our elections. The vice president is still in power, and the former president has the authority. Why don't we sit and find a lasting solution to it?" he quizzed.
The prolonged conflict in Bawku has claimed over 20 lives and caused the loss of properties.
