The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, officially filed his nomination for the presidential election on Monday, September 9, 2024.

Supporters of the party gathered in large numbers at the Electoral Commission’s Headquarters in Accra to support him.

According to GhanaWeb's Ishmael Batoma, who is at the EC HQ, Dr Bawumia arrived in the early hours of Monday morning, accompanied by his running mate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the party’s General Secretary, John Frimpong Kodua; Samira Bawumia and other party executives.

Addressing the EC, Dr Bawumia called for a fair and smooth process in the pending elections and urged Ghanaians to pray for the electoral body to successfully oversee a credible election.

“I believe our prayers, behaviors as we go through [election] and our conduct will be important to ensure that this process is very peaceful at the end of the day. I believe also that we should pray for the Electoral Commission because they do a very difficult job because whenever you go into an election, you are either going to win or lose and usually the EC is the scapegoat from people who may not have won,” he said.

Dr Bawumia also expressed confidence in the EC, assuring it that he is certain the electoral body will successfully manage the election and ensure a peaceful process without any issues.

He further urged Ghanaians to protect their esteemed reputation as a peaceful country.

“I believe the EC will live up to the task. Historically, I think Ghana is in an enviable position as far as the conduct of elections are concerned,” he added.
