Bawumia is not a serious politician - Dela Edem

Dela Edem, a member of the Communication team of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has descended heavily on Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for comments made following the increment of electricity and water tariffs.

The Vice President on the back of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission’s (PURC) recent hike in electricity and water tariffs by 5.94 per cent and 2.22 per cent, respectively, said, “between 2013 and 2016, just the last four years of the NDC government, the cumulative increase in electricity tariff was 166%”.

According to him, “In 2018, we [NPP] reduced electricity prices of businesses by 30% and for households by 17.5 %, an average of around 22%. Earlier this year in July, there was an increase in electricity price of 11% and yesterday of 5.6%. When you take the total cumulative increase on average, as I said, between 2017 and today, you have a cumulative decrease of about 5%.”

He continued: “So, the NDC, in their last four years, increased [electricity tariff] by 166%, we have come down since we have been in government by 5% on average”.

Speaking in a discussion on Neat FM, Dela Edem in reaction said, "from the time Bawumia became the Vice President, his utterances prove he was not the one we thought he was. The Vice President is not a serious politician at all. There is no record in this country that electricity was reduced by 5 percent because if it was, it would have been gazetted. He is just joking with us. You said you will reduce the tariffs...but it was not official. Our Vice President is a doctor in economics but now he is being mocked on social media. I thought he will stop by now and redeem his credibility as a Vice President but he keeps deceiving us here and there.."

However, William Kojo Frimpong, a member of the Communication team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) disagrees.

Speaking on the same platform, he said instead of the NDC insulting the Vice President they should be factual and provide figures to back their claims.
