Bawumia launches new Ghana Electronic Procurement System

Vice president Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has today April 30, launched a new Electronic Public Procurement portal as part of efforts to fight corruption.

The project is expected to enhance transparency in the public procurement process, provide a common platform for use by public institutions in public procurement and public financial management, as well as enhance competition by facilitating increased participation of service providers for government contracts.

Dr Bawumia who was speaking during the launch in Accra detailed the introduction of the E-procurement system would bring a major relief to contractors and suppliers who are often robbed of the genuine opportunity to win bids for contracts they tender.

The E-system will also check rampant corrupt practices which emanate from the involvement of human interface in the procurement processes.

Bawumia indicated that more than 90 per cent of the country’s problems are as a result of procurement processes and lack of a robust system to create avenues for a chunk of the funds meant for development projects to slip into individual pockets.

“The launch of this project really is a dream come true. When you look at some of the problems we have in this country, we usually talk about corruption. And when you look at corruption, let’s be honest to ourselves, over 90% of it has to do with corruption. It’s really a procurement problem. The biggest enemy of corruption is transparency. This system apart from enhancing transparency also enhances coordination or competition”. He reiterated.



The E-Procurement Project forms part of the wider E-Ghana Project sponsored by the World Bank and spearheaded by the Public Procurement Authority to automate the process of public procurement using Information Communication Technology (ICT) applications.
