Bawumia rubbishes Mahama’s transforming Ghana claim

Vice Presidential Candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamadu Bawumia has pooh-poohed the Mahama–led Administration’s claim that it is changing lives and transforming Ghana.

According to the renowned Economist, the assertion by the government is false as it does not reflect the facts on the ground which has also been corroborated by a large section of the Ghanaian public.

President John Dramani Mahama who is seeking a second term in office is embarking on campaign dubbed ‘Changing lives, Transforming Ghana’ ahead of the November election.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government is priding itself for enhancing the welfare of many Ghanaians through pragmatic social intervention policies which it has implemented, while also transforming the country through numerous major infrastructure projects executed across the length and breadth of Ghana in almost four years of President Mahama’s reign.

But speaking at the campaign launch of the Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway in Accra, Dr Mahamadu Bawumia told the teeming crowd of NPP supporters that it is obvious President Mahama is a confused man.

“Haven’t you heard Mahama saying he’s changing lives and transforming Ghana? Whenever I hear him saying this, I ask myself does he really understand what transformation is all about? When the NDC assumed power it inherited a GDP growth of 9.1%, now that figure has reduced drastically to 3.6%. Where is the transformation Mahama is talking about?

“When the NDC took over the reign of power, cocoa output was almost a million tonne in 2010 from 700,000 tonne in 2008, today it is less than 600,000 tonne, where is the transformation Mahama is talking about?

“During the NPP regime, minimum wage between 2001 and 2012 in dollar terms went up by 241%, during the NDC time from 2009 to 2015 it has gone down by 13%. This cannot be said to be transforming Ghana” Dr Mahamadu Bawumia noted.
