Be good citizens – Chief Justice challenges students

Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo has challenged students in Ghana to enquire, know and live their lives in line with what is expected of a good citizen.

Addressing the Annual Chief Justice’s Mentoring Programme which bring together students from Junior High School to inspire them to pick up the study of law under the theme:”The Duties and Responsibilities of a Good Citizens”, at the Supreme Court building, the Lady Chief Justice said the Students should not accept that they are too young to be good and responsible citizens.

“Shirking of duties and responsibilities causes a lot of trouble. Some of the troubles or what we consider troubles in our society right now or across the region of West Africa or across the African Continent are nothing but the outcomes of neglect and the shirking of duties and responsibilities”.

The Chief Justice urged the Students not to neglect their education at this prime time of their lives and hope that they will catch up with education later in life.

“If you shirk your education now, you will not be able to pick it up properly when you grow up, you will have a lot of catching up to do and there are many opportunities that could have come you but may be lost to you forever” Justice Sophia Akuffo said.

During the first half of the event, the students had the opportunity to ask varied questions on the law, the Court Structure, as well as politics in general. A panel made up of Justice Eric Kyei Baffour, a Justice of the High Court, Madam Josephine Nkrumah, Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Dora Eshun, a District Court Judge and Mrs. Sheila Minkah-Premo, a private legal practitioner, took turns to answer the questions of the Students.

This years Chief Justice’s Mentoring programme has students from the Independence Avenue “2” Basic School, Akropong School for the Blind, Mampong Demonstration School for the Deaf and Bishop Girls Junior High School. The rest were Osu Presbyterian Girls School Sempe 1 &2 Basic School, Kaneshie Awudome ‘3’ Junior High, Teshie LEKMA 12 Junior High School, Nanka Bruce Junior High School, St. Kizito Junior High School and Bishop’s Mixed Junior High School.
