Be mindful of your utterances – NCCE to parties

Miss Gladys M. Osman, an official of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has called on politicians to be careful with their utterances as this could mar the positive political achievements the country has recorded.

“Our call is for actors in our political arena to exhibit a high level of tolerance and engage in consultations and dialogues to address divergent views”, he said.

Miss Osman said this at a seminar held by Practicum Group Three Sandwich Guidance and Counseling Students of University of Education Winneba at the central campus of the University at Winneba.

The seminar was on the theme: “Political intolerance and its consequences on the society”.

The effect of political intolerance on the society are numerous, devastating and can be looked at in many ways- politically, economically, socially and religiously, she said.

She said the country after her numerous political upheavals and instability since independence has gone through five successive free and fair elections.

“The stability chalked can be attributed to political maturity and tolerance on the part of the citizens including all political actors”, she said.

In an election year you are likely to hear very harsh words from people you deeply respect but it is important for us to stay calm, remain level-headed and try as much as possible to stay out of trouble, she said.

The Deputy Director said the NCCE recognizes students as strategic in this year’s electoral process because they will be participating in various ways and could contribute positively to ensure a successful election.
