Authorities in the Lower Manya Krobo District of the Eastern Region have increased efforts to curtail further spread of the Coronavirus in the region, following some over 20 confirmed cases of the disease in the area.

So far, the Eastern Region has recorded 32 cases of novel coronavirus after its first case on April, 1.

Following the increased numbers, authorities in the area are increasing efforts to combat the disease and curb further spread.

MCE for Lower Manya Krobo, Simon Tetteh told Ghanaweb in an interview,

“As a municipality, we have formed the public health committee and we’ll be working assiduously to fight the virus. We’ve formed a taskforce; the surveillance with the security committee members, NADMO, the health committee, assembly members, opinion leaders and all other stakeholders, we’ll be working together to ensure that we stop the spread of Coronavirus in our municipality and other areas.” He said, adding,

“There’s a directive that if you are not a food stuff seller at the Agormanya market, don’t step foot in the market for the next two weeks. The taskforce is also monitoring compliance to enforce the directives of the President. We’ve also distributed a lot of veronica buckets at various points in the markets so that regular handwashing will continue. We’ve given them sanitisers, tissue paper, liquid soaps and the education team is always in town, always educating.”

Health Promotion Officer, Rose Lawer on her part noted that though observance of the social distancing order has been difficult, education by the team has been increased and is gradually sinking in.

“We are ensuring that people practice the social distancing we are talking about because in fact, the market place, it’s a problem for us. I always say that behaviour change is a process so we won’t get it all hundred percent now but we are hoping that by next week, it will sink in and it will be better.”
