Beggars invade Legon campus

Thu, 21 Apr 2005 Source: GNA

Accra, April 21, GNA - The campus of the University of Ghana, Legon, is gradually becoming a fertile ground and a safe haven for beggars.

This has become worrying development for students due to the aggressive nature the beggars go about by their "business."

What most students find more worrying is the embarrassing comments some of the beggars make when their requests are turned down. Others also make very solemn and miserable demands, which one feels very bad if they are not able to help them.

But the fundamental question being asked by the students is whether the campus was the right place for people to seek alms.

Some of the beggars often feign so sick and weak that they would die the next moment if they do not get financial support. Some of them also hop from one lecture room to the other, parading themselves as HIV/AIDS victims.
