Bench warrant on 36 workers for defaulting communal labour

A Kumasi Circuit Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of 36 wood workers for refusing to take part in a clean-up exercise organized by the Metropolitan Assembly at the Sokoban Wood Village in Kumasi.

They had failed to appear before the court despite having been served with court summons.

Mr Isaac Bassanyin, KMA’s Noise and Pollution Officer, said the exercise was part of efforts by the assembly to improve environmental sanitation at the wood enclave.

Adequate publicity was given to the event but the accused, all resident at Sokoban and operating shops at the wood enclave, refused to participate.

They were therefore invited by the KMA to explain why they were absent but they ignored the invitation.

Meanwhile, seven other wood workers, who also failed to participate in the clean up, were each admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢500.00 with a surety to re-appear on March 9.

Another offender, Kwabena Abeka, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a fine of GH¢100.00 or in default he would serve three months in prison.
