Newmont Ahafo Mine last weekend presented a cheque for GHC15,000 to the people of Beposo in the Bosomtwe District of the Ashanti Region towards their community water project.
The gesture was in appreciation to the chiefs and people for their hospitality when the company’s chartered helicopter took an emergency landing in the community.
Sometime in June last year, the helicopter conveying executive members of the company from the Ahafo Mine site at Kenyasi in the Asutifi District of Brong-Ahafo Region to Accra made an unscheduled stop in the town when it developed a fault.
The eight people on board escaped unhurt.
Mr. Derek Boateng, Regional Manager, Environment and Social Responsibility of the Ahafo Mine, presenting the cheque pledged Newmont’s commitment to ensure that the relationship established was strengthened for their mutual benefit.
Nana Kankam Boadu Apenteng II, Chief of Beposo who received the cheque thanked the company for the gesture and appealed for more support.
He said the community initiated the GHC200,000 water project to provide potable water for the people.
It includes the drilling of three mechanised boreholes with a pump and a reservoir.
