Collins Adomako Mensah, the Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North Constituency in the Ashanti Region, has stated that former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo had issued a prior warning to New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament ahead of the Speaker of Parliament election during the night sitting of the House.

According to him, despite the warning, some NPP MPs, driven by anger and internal disagreements, went ahead to vote for Alban Kingsford Bagbin, an NDC-affiliated member, who is now the Speaker of Parliament.

Speaker Bagbin pushes for structured mentorship to guide first-term MPs

Speaking in an interview on Movement TV on April 10, 2026, in relation to the alleged rejection of some bills by the Minority in Parliament, Adomako Mensah expressed concern over the development.

“Why are we blaming the Speaker? I was at the Alisa Hotel before we went to Parliament to vote in the speakership election. Nana Addo argued that we were better off with someone we already knew, one of our own occupying the Speaker’s chairs rather than any other person.

“But when we went to vote, the same NPP members, out of anger and hatred, voted for Bagbin. Meanwhile, the Speaker of Parliament is a very powerful position someone who can even declare a seat vacant under certain circumstances.

“It is not a position to be taken lightly. We in the NPP handed that position to the NDC on a silver platter, driven by anger, hatred and frustration," he said.

He lamented that the blame for such developments should not be placed on the Speaker but rather on NPP MPs who, in his view, betrayed their party.
