Berekum (B/A), Aug. 31, GNA - Seventy-nine motor accidents were recorded in Berekum Municipality between January and December last year in which 22 people died and 109 were injured. Assistant Superintendent of Police Amos Yaw Appiah, the commander of the Motor Transport and Traffic Unit in Berekum, told the GNA in an interview that in 2009 some 66 accidents occurred in which 13 people died and 56 people were injured. He said most of the accidents were caused by driving with worn-out tyres, cracked windscreen and driving mirrors as well as wrongful overtaking in curves and driving while using mobile phones. ASP Appiah said negative behaviour of some passengers and pedestrians also contributed to motor accidents, explaining that some passengers engaged drivers in conversations, arguments or sometimes even quarrels and urged such passengers to refrain from such acts. He said the Unit had embarked on regular patrols on highways to check drivers.
