Obuasi, Nov 18, GNA - His Eminence Peter Cardinal Appiah Turkson has been re-elected President of the Catholic Bishops' conference for one more year.

Cardinal Turkson, who has already served two three-year terms as President, should have been replaced at the end of the just-ended conference at Obuasi.

According to a press statement signed by Mr Benedict Assorow, the Executive Secretary of the Department of Social Communication of the Church, the Bishops' decision to retain him was a sign of respect and appreciation for his new elevation.

"According to the constitution of the Ghana Catholic Bishops conference Cardinal Turkson, having served two terms, should have been replaced but one of the reasons for keeping him as President is as a sign of respect for his new office and to give the Conference sometime to reflect on his additional responsibilities as the only Cardinal of the Catholic Church in Ghana."

The statement said the Conference also agreed to maintain all other officers of the Conference until elections are held in November next year.

The weeklong conference which had the theme "The Catholic Church - Reading The Signs of the Times", discussed issues relating to evangelisation, church-state relationship, the national economy, health, the environment and indiscipline.

The Conference issued out a 29-point communiqu? that touched on all aspects of national life.
